Manga Publishers

Tokyopop

Currently one of the largest publishers of manga in the UK. You can find Tokyopop books in most bookshops with their distinctive branding and bookracks. They currently have a deal with HarperCollins and will be producing several manga titles based on bestselling HC authors (one example is Meg Cabot).

Tokyopop is very keen on outreach work and will willingly help to promote manga to TRGs by making available posters and preview books; as well as putting Librarians into contact with Manga artists. Their website is fairly comprehensive but there is limited information currently available on UK titles and several of the information links are empty – although this may change at any time.

Tanoshimi

The manga imprint of Random House, still new so it is possible to start buying titles from the beginning. Tanoshimi publications also contain information about Japanese culture and interesting bits of information about the drawing of the manga at the end of the books.

Viz

Gollancz

Publisher of several manga titles that are popular as anime or games – e.g. Yu-Gi-Oh and DragonBall Z.

Blu

Sweatdrop Studios

Sweatdrop Studios is Britain’s first manga collective and producer of English-language manga titles. The obvious plus factor of buying Sweatdrop titles is the possibility of getting the artists in to talk to Teen Reading Groups or running a manga workshop.
